Consultation's role in safer workplaces

Why consult?

Consulting with your workers is the most important step to improving safety and health in your workplace. Genuine consultation contributes to a positive workplace culture, where everyone has shared safety values and safety is always top of mind.

Consultation is two way: it means providing your workers with information and considering their views before you make decisions that affect work health and safety.

Plus—it’s a legal requirement under our safety laws!

When must you consult?

There are some very specific times when you must consult:

  • when identifying hazards and assessing risk, and making decisions about what control measures you’ll put in place
  • when proposing changes to your work environment, processes, practices, or making purchasing decisions (for example, of chemicals or equipment) that affect workers’ health and safety.

It’s easier to achieve a safe workplace when everyone works together to identify hazards and risks, talks about health and safety concerns, and comes together to find solutions.
