Late on a Sunday night in April 2006 our speaker today/tonight received a call that would not only change his life forever but the lives of two other men he had never even met. For 5 days, the Beaconsfield Miners Todd Russell and Brant Webb had been trapped underground after a minor earthquake had triggered a mine collapse in the small town of Beaconsfield in Tasmania.
Darren Flanagan is an explosive’s expert. When the rescue teams discovered Todd and Brant to be still alive, Darren was flown at midnight by a private Lear Jet from his home town Nowra, directly to the mine.
How that one phone call changed his life from that of an ordinary family man to one of the real heroes of the great escape, is what he will share with us today/tonight. Darren’s story is one of courage, relentless pressure, self-belief and sheer determination.
Darren Flanagan was given a nickname, which has stuck with him since. Todd and Brant call him “The Gun”. It was through his expertise and experience; Darren was able to fire the explosives that eventually released them from their tomb, 925m underground.
