The Mines Work Health and Safety (Supplementary Requirements) Regulations 2022 begin on 26 December 2022. They replace the Mines Work Health and Safety (Supplementary Requirements) Regulations 2012 which have been remade as required every 10 years.
The 2022 Regulations support the Mines Work Health and Safety (Supplementary Requirements) Act 2012. Both apply at Tasmanian mines, in conjunction with the Work Health and Safety Act 2012, and address mining specific hazards, risks, processes and control measures.
There is very little change between the 2012 and 2022 Regulations. Old transitional arrangements that have done their work and are no longer required have been deleted; minor word changes have been made for greater clarity; and savings and transitional provisions have been added to ensure that things done under the 2012 Regulations are recognised under the 2022 Regulations.
It is expected that the 2022 Regulations will be replaced in late 2024, when a new, substantially improved set of mines safety regulations will be ready for implementation. To give effect to this intent, regulation 45 rescinds the 2022 Regulations on 26 December 2024.
